Submitting a Passport Application at the Washington D.C. Passport Offices

Every US citizen should have a passport so that when they are ready to travel, they are prepared to go. Getting a passport is not a difficult thing to do unless you are not adequately prepared when you start the process. In Washington D.C., you can submit your application to any Washington D.C. Passport Offices. Before you go to a facility, make sure you have these documents first:

  1. Passport Form (DS-11, DS64, or DS-82)
  2. Supporting Documents
  3. Proof of Travel

Along with the papers, you must have the fee to cover the application, execution, and service fee (for expedited processing).

The post office and other sites like the county clerk’s office, courthouse, and public library will accept your application form. At the time of submission, you will get two options to process your application. These options are determined on how quickly you will need your new passport.

Washington D.C. Post Offices

The post offices in D.C. will offer routine processing and expedited processing for your application. Regular or routine is the most chosen option and the cheaper of both. It takes 4 to 8 weeks before you get a new passport in the mail. Expedited, on the other hand, gets you a passport in 2 to 3 weeks but you must show proof of travel in the next 2 to 3 weeks. You must pay an additional cost to cover the speedy process.

Rush Service

For reasons beyond your control that requires you to need a passport sooner than two, hire a private expeditor or go to a regional passport agency. Both can get a passport in less than two weeks, or in a day if you need it. But to get a new passport that quick, you must submit these documents to either agency:

  1. Passport form (DS-11, DS64, or DS-82)
  2. Supporting documents
  3. Proof of travel
  4. Two letters of authorization (only for an expeditor)
  5. Company letter (just for a business trip)
  6. Emergency proof (for an emergency trip)
  7. Pay cost (passport, execution, and service fees)

 Regional Passport Agency

A regional passport agency requires you to submit your papers in person at their office. To do so, you must get an appointment at the National Passport Information Center by calling the toll-free number. You will get a scheduled interview at the Washington Passport Agency. Be early to avoid delays due to the high security since the office is in a Federal Building. Also, do not bring to the building any hazardous material or prohibited weapons. You will be arrested and miss your meeting.

Private Expeditor

An expeditor does not require a meeting for you to use the service. You can submit your documents by overnight mail including your payment. Once you get approval, the new passport can then be mailed back by overnight shipping again. If you choose to visit the office to submit your papers, the processing time will be the same.

So, the choice you make to get a passport will determine how much you pay for one. If you choose to go to the post office, a regional passport agency, or a private expeditor, in the end, you will have your document and ready to travel.
